2020 census As of the
2020 census, Garner had a population of 31,159. The median age was 38.5 years. 20.9% of residents were under the age of 18 and 15.7% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there were 90.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males age 18 and over. 99.5% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.5% lived in rural areas. There were 12,844 households in Garner, including 7,637 family households. Of all households, 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living in them, 43.2% were married-couple households, 17.8% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 31.8% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 13,779 housing units, of which 6.8% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.8%, and the rental vacancy rate was 9.4%.

married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00. In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $47,380, and the median income for a family was $58,302. Males had a median income of $37,359 versus $29,805 for females. The
