2020 census As of the
2020 census, New Philadelphia had a population of 17,677. The median age was 40.4 years, 21.6% of residents were under the age of 18, and 19.7% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 96.8 males age 18 and over. 99.2% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.8% lived in rural areas. There were 7,613 households in New Philadelphia, of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 41.5% were married-couple households, 20.5% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 28.9% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 8,122 housing units, of which 6.3% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.5% and the rental vacancy rate was 8.0%.

racial makeup of the city was 96.89% White, 0.97% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 1.33% of the population. Of the 7,338 households, 28.0% had children under 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were not families. About 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.88. In the city, the age distribution was 23.0% under 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $33,235, and for a family was $42,896. Males had a median income of $32,157 versus $20,363 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $18,745. About 7.7% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the
