The Serra do Tabuleiro State Park is named after the Serra do Tabuleiro, a tabular mountain that is a prominent feature. The Serra do Tabuleiro is one of Santa Catarina's Eastern Mountain Ranges, others being the Mar de Morros and part of the Serra do Mar. It covers an area of in the municipalities of
Florianópolis,
Palhoça,
Santo Amaro da Imperatriz,
Águas Mornas,
São Bonifácio,
São Martinho,
Imaruí and
Paulo Lopes. It includes the islands of Fortaleza/Araçatuba, Andrade, Papagaio Pequeno, Três Irmãs, Moleques do Sul, Siriú, Coral, Cardos and the south tip of
Santa Catarina Island. The park was established by decree 1.260 in 1975. The purpose was to protect the rich biodiversity of the region and the water sources for greater
Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. The lush forests protect the sources of the
Vargem do Braço,
Cubatão and
D'Una rivers, which supply most of the drinking water for greater Florianópolis and the south coast region. The basin of the Massiambu River is fully contained within the park. ==Environment==
