2020 census As of the
2020 census, Stoughton had a population of 13,173. The median age was 41.3 years. 6.8% of residents were under the age of 5, 22.7% of residents were under the age of 18, and 18.6% of residents were 65 years of age or older. 52.0% of residents were female. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.2 males age 18 and over. Of the total population, 601 were veterans. 99.1% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.9% lived in rural areas. There were 5,459 households in Stoughton, of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 49.2% were married-couple households, 15.7% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 27.5% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.99. The median age in the city was 39.2 years. 25.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.6% were from 25 to 44; 26.2% were from 45 to 64; and 14.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.2% male and 52.8% female.
