A UFO religion, also called a UFO cult, flying saucer cult, or extraterrestrial religion, is a religion that's primarily focus is on extraterrestrials (ET), spacecrafts, and aliens, framing these ideas as scientific, material realities rather than just a supernatural or spiritual movement. Typically, UFO religions replace the notions of Gods and miracles with science, technology, and spacecrafts. They resemble traditional Western religions with superhuman beings, but these beings are extraterrestrials rather than gods. These religions have their roots in the tropes of early science fiction, weird fiction writings, ufology, and emerge to gain popularity when more mainstream religions fail to fill the notion of faith for people. In recent decades, contemporary UFO religions and related spiritual thought have been renewed, fueled by speculative videos and images, giving rise to movements of new believers in organized communities and informal groups. The earliest roots for UFO religions can be sourced from the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875, as they believed in spiritually evolved being on Venus. However, historians consider the Aetherius Society, founded by George King, to be the first UFO religion, while others consider it to be "I AM" Activity. Overall, the origins of UFO religions have been debated, with no definitive answer.
