In 1809 built a and named the settlement
Godlewo in his own honour, although
Lithuanians started calling it
Garliava. This year is generally viewed as the year Garliava was founded. It lay along a significant postal route between
Saint Petersburg, Kaunas,
Marijampolė, and
Warsaw. Godlewski also built a place of worship for
Lutherans and a
synagogue for
Jews. At the time, it was part of the short-lived
Napoleonic
Duchy of Warsaw, and after its dissolution in 1815, it became part of the so-called
Congress Poland in
Russian Empire. After
World War I, it became part of the newly restored Lithuania. == Notable residents ==
